Palm Bay room? One of our members has a unique problem and request. Please read on... Hi Eric and Susie, Here's the info on the students I was telling you about. Thanks so much for trying to get the word out. I have been hosting 2 lovely young women from Latvia. They are Inga Panova (20) and Rita Kalnina (21). There’s a story that goes with how they landed at my house. They found me through my brother in law when they stopped to rest on a bench outside his real estate office. He was immediately taken by them and determined to find them a place to stay for 2 weeks. That's how I came to know them. I would be more than happy to have them continue to stay with me but they will be working in the Palm Bay area June 24 through August 26. I am trying to find host families where they can stay for a few weeks during that time. They came to the U.S. sponsored by the Southwestern Book Company, which is based in Nashville. You can read more about it on the web at www. southwestern.com. All the people they hire for the summer (3,000 of them) are college students. They have to have top grades and be able to pay for everything. The company simply provides them with one week of training on how to sell their educational books. The students have to buy their own sample books. The only money they make is when they sell a book. They're really nice educational books ranging from preschool to high school. But they're pretty pricey. They supply them with a territory and a manager. And that's it. They are expected to remain in the field from 7a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Sunday they meet with their manager from 7 a.m. till around noon. Their only free time is Sunday afternoon. The part that's somewhat alarming is that the students are left on their own to find housing, a way to get around and basically fend for themselves. The manager keeps tabs on them by having the girls call her 3 times a day, the last call is at 10:00 p.m. The 2 young women I have staying with me are absolutely delightful. Their command of the English language is excellent and they are very bright and determined. Their needs are pretty basic. A respite from the long hard days they put in. Yes, these girls were walking everywhere until I lent them my bicycles. (A car would be awesome, one of them has a drivers license.) They are gone from 7 in the morning till 8:30 at night. The company would like them out till 9 p.m. I insist that they are home before dark for goodness sake. They are also expected to eat all their meals out, which is a dreadful thought. They have been fixing their own lunches. I have convinced them to eat breakfast at my house before they leave. They enjoy a shower, hot tea and cookies when they get home at night. And a nice clean bed. I so hope that I can find some people who are able and willing to open up their homes to these girls. I assure you it will a be a wonderful experience for you. Please call me at 757-8672 if you think you might be interested. I find the company's practices disturbing. They’ve been running this program since 1868 as a way for college students to earn money. They pride themselves on not having changed their “formula for success". I think it's time they did a reality check! This is not the U.S. from 1868. In this day and age I think they are putting young people at great risk and am surprised no one has taken them to task for it. In fact they won the Best Business Award in Nashville last year. Please check out their website to get more information: http://www.southwestern.com/. Thanks for your consideration. Linda Sunday, June 10, 2007

Membership Message What if we didn’t have members? What would we do if no one renewed their membership or became a new member of HPoB? Without your membership dollars we could probably continue with the Dining Night Out’s but we certainly couldn’t pay the travel of some of our guest speakers. The Big events like the Turkey-free Thanksgiving Dinner and the Independence from Meat picnic would be canceled (it costs us to rent the pavilions and we purchase some of the food). And we couldn’t even think about restarting out potluck dinners. So please do support our great events and join as a paid member of Healthy Planet.
My Space Our new Potluck Coordinator Richard Powell of the Indian River Blue Grass Boys has created a new MySpace page for HPoB. We are hoping this will help increase our membership and reach out to younger people. www.myspace.com/healthyplanetofbrevard Thanks Richard Sunday, June 03, 2007
