"Life cannot be classified in terms of a simple neurological ladder, with
human beings at the top; it is more accurate to talk of different forms of
intelligence, each with its strengths and weaknesses. This point was well
demonstrated in the minutes before last December's tsunami,

when tourists grabbed their digital cameras and ran after the ebbing surf,

and all the'dumb' animals made for the hills."

~ B.R. Myers, author (1963- )

Core Meeting Minutes for August
HEALTHY PLANET OF BREVARD MEETING MINUTES
August 23, 2005

The core group of the Healthy Planet of Brevard met at the Satellite Beach Library, on August 23, 2005, at 7:30 p.m. In attendance were Judy McCluney, Eric Fricker, John Cielukowski, Marcie Katz, Barbara Bingnear and Claris Withrow.

Claris read the minutes of the last meeting.

Judy gave the treasurer’s report. Bank balance is $1,007.32 but because of money set aside for 501(c)3, the working balance is $707.32 In reference to the $1,000 HPoB was to get from the closing of Community Harvest, Barbara Bingnear said that she had been trying to reach Barbara Holder by phone and has been unsuccessful. She will continue trying.

Eric and Marcie reported on the Space Coast Progressive Alliance Summer Social. They talked with a lot of people and there was interest shown in HPoB’s message. Fifteen people provided their e-mail addresses to receive our newsletter. Marcie said that at the next event she would provide a list of our upcoming events for interested people.

Membership - Dan e-mailed his report which included 3 new memberships. There are currently 40 paid members and 26 inactive. Discussion was held that a local membership chair person was needed. Dan is doing a great job from a distance but someone is needed that can attend meetings and be at local events. There was also a discussion about changing the annual membership to begin whenever a person signs up rather than have all renew in January. Nothing definite was decided. Dan had sent out an e-mail about putting images and quotes on the envelopes that he mails membership material to our members. It was the general feeling of the core group that the images and quotes should be of a positive nature.

For the Howard Lyman event on October 21st, it was decided that we would purchase 25 disposable signs for advertising. Also we will talk with Jeff Nall at the Florida Today newspaper to try to get an article in the paper. The Cocoa Beach Library will have it listed in their newsletter.

John has no price as yet for the t-shirts.

The next Dining Out will be held at the Taste of Goa on September 10th. John is coordinating with the restaurant for the menu and the price.

Turkey-Free Thanksgiving - Judy reported that it will be held at the Suntree Rotary Park on the Indian River on Saturday, November 19th with setup beginning at 12:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held at 2:30 and dinner at 3:00. The theme will be Harvest Festival and Gratitude for the Bounty of the Earth.

Next meeting will be held on September 27th at the Satellite Beach Library at 7:30 p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Howard Lyman is coming back to town Friday, October 21st. Howard will be speaking at the Cocoa Beach Library at 7 pm. Howard is famous as the cattle rancher turned vegetarian who convinced Oprah to swear off hamburgers on national TV. Oprah and Howard were then sued by the National Cattleman's Beef Association for "food disparagement". Thankfully the good guys won the case and Howard is now touring the country, telling people why he (a sixth generation cattle rancher) would give up eating meat and dairy. Howard is a dynamic speaker. Arrive early for this one, last time Howard was here we had to turn people away at the door. This event will be in conjunction with our past chairperson Suzanne Elliot and her healthy living business Fun Innovative Training.
