We inspire people to shift towards a plant-centered diet to improve their health, to encourage compassion for animals, and to achieve a sustainable environment.
We visit local restaurants for our vegan "Dining Out" events. We bring in speakers, medical doctors and animal advocates, for inspiring health related talks.
We are located in Brevard County, Florida.

HPoB July Core Meeting Minutes
HEALTHY PLANET OF BREVARD MEETING MINUTES
July 18, 2005

The core group of the Healthy Planet of Brevard met at the home of John Cielukowski in Cocoa Beach, on July 18, 2005, at 7:30 p.m. In attendance were Judy McCluney, Eric Fricker, John Cielukowski, Marcie Katz and Claris Withrow.

Claris read the minutes of the last meeting.

Judy gave the treasurer’s report. Bank balance is $957.32 but because of money set aside for 501c3, the working balance is $657.32. Eric commented that HPoB was supposed to receive $1,000 from the closing of Community Harvest but Barbara was absent from this meeting so we will get her report on that next month.

Membership - Dan e-mailed his report which is unchanged from last month. Eric said that Laura Parrish told him at the dining out on Saturday night that she had never received a newsletter. Eric will contact Dan to see if they are being mailed out.

John suggested that we get some good quality t-shirts and have our logo put on them and make them available for sale. He has a friend at work that does this sort of thing and so will talk with him about costs, etc., and a source for the t-shirts.

Events - In Vicki’s absence, Eric listed the upcoming events. On Saturday, July 30th at Kiwanis Island is the Space Coast Progressive Alliance Summer Social. Marcie reported that Cammie Donaldson said we should have our table set up at 4:30 and bring a covered dish for the pot luck. Then August 13th is our next Dining Out at Cedars Café in Melbourne. The September 10th Dining Out will be at the Taste of Goa in Cape Canaveral. The October 8 Dining Out will be at Cara Mia in Cocoa Village. The November 5th Dining Out will be at Asian Gourmet in Melbourne. And the December 3rd Dining Out will be at Daisen Japanese Restaurant on Merritt Island. Vicki has finalized the plans for the Howard Lyman event on October 21st at the Cocoa Beach Library. It will be held at 7:00 p.m. John will check on getting signs made for advertising and Eric will notify the Library of the time so they can get it in their newsletter.

Eric has received information about a Vegan Conference to be held at The Farm in Summertown, TN, on August10th through the 14th.

A discussion was held as to the theme for the Turkey Free Thanksgiving this year. General consensus was to leave it pretty much as it was last year.

Next meeting will be held on August 23rd at the Satellite Beach Library at 7:30 p.m.
Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.

Native Plant Society Picnic
There will be a potluck picnic and nature walk on Saturday the 23rd, sponsored by the Native Plant Society. Unfortunately it is not a vegetarian event but they will be providing veggie burgers. They would like you to bring a covered dish to share. HPoB suggests that you bring a vegan dish and label it as vegan.

The walk is at 9 am and there will be coffee, tea and donuts provided. The walk is about 1 mile long. The picnic starts at 10:30 AM.

It all takes place at F. Burton Smith Park out west of Cocoa on 520. Contact Gail Hill of the Native Plant Society at 453-4865 for more information.

A PHILOSOPHY OF VEGAN VALUES
Claris found this information on the web and thought someof us might be interested in it.

by Stanley M. Sapon, Ph.D.
Reproduced from Dr. Sapon’s website: www.veganvalues.org

The term philosophy is often used to mean a set of basic values and attitudes toward life, nature and society. In this sense, Veganism is a "Philosophy of Life," guided by what I envision as an essential core of values and principles:
0 Vegans see life as a phenomenon to be treasured, revered and respected. We do not see animals as either "The Enemy" to be subdued, or the Materials for Food, Fabric or Fun that were put on Earth for human use.
0 Vegans see themselves as a part of the natural world, rather than its owners or its masters.
0 Veganism recognizes no expendable or superfluous species that humans are free to hurt or destroy. Species of life-forms need not justify their existence, nor plead for protection from extinction on the grounds of their potential usefulness as food or medicine for humans. We continue to be burdened and misguided by adages such as "A weed is a plant we have not yet found a use for."
0 Veganism acknowledges the intrinsic legitimacy of all life. It rejects any hierarchy of acceptable suffering among sentient creatures. It is no more acceptable to torment or kill creatures with "primitive nervous systems" than those with "highly developed nervous systems". The value of life to its possessor is the same, whether it be the life of a clam, a crayfish, a carp, a cow, a chicken, or a child.
0 Veganism understands that gentleness cannot be a product of violence, harmony cannot be a product of strife, and peace cannot be a product of contention and conflict.
0 Vegan ideals encompass much more than advocacy of a diet free of animal products, or a fervent defense of animal rights. Veganism excludes no sentient being - animal or human - from its commitment to compassionate, gentle benevolence. To show tender regard for the suffering of animals, yet treat humans with callous contempt, is a disheartening contradiction of Vegan principles.
0 John Muir, talking about the natural environment, once observed "Every time I bend down to pick something up, I find it is connected to something else." There is an equivalent "ecology" to our behavior. Everything we do connects to something else; every action touches on the world around us, either close at hand and noticeable, or far away and unperceived, immediate in its effect or distant in time.
0 I If Veganism has a prime value, it is simply that life-respecting, compassion overrides individual issues of custom, convenience, comfort or cuisine.
0 If there is a single article of faith, it is that commitment to Vegan values will bring us closer to a world in which the fate and fortune of a planet and its life forms do not hang on the judgment or the generosity of one species.
0 If there is a single concept that both generates and sustains the meaning and the power of the Vegan world-view, it is found in the word mindfulness. As Vegans, we strive to be thoughtful, aware and concerned about the impact of our choices, our actions and our decisions. The fruit of this awareness is inner peace, the quiet strength of ethical confidence, and an uplifting sense of fulfillment.
