Independence From Meat Picnic "Huge Success" The picnic was a huge success. We had twice as many people there as last year. I counted almost 70 at one point. The breeze from the ocean made the temperature under the pavillion just right. Vicki made two very chocolate cakes and in strawberries wrote "We Love John". This was in honor of John Cielukowski, who organized the picnic and it was his birthday. John barbequed the burgers and not-dogs, provided by Sunseed Food Co-op. Sunseed also provided condiments and all the fixings, as well as soda pop. We want to thanks everyone who brought food to share, it was great. If anyone took pictures please email them to me so I can post them on the blog. Also if anyone is fluent in both Spanish and English, I think it would be nice if we had you on the core group. It would be nice to post some of our information in Spanish for our Latin veggies. Unfortunately the parking was horrendous and I have received email from one family that turned away for lack of parking. The core group will be looking into a better location for next year. FL Today article FL Today had a great article about our picnic. Barbecue without meat? You bet Veggie burgers, hot dogs, salads on the menu BY JEFF NALL FOR FLORIDA TODAY Heart-Healthy Summer Barbecue When: noon to 3 p.m. Sunday Where: Lori Wilson Park, 1500 N. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach. Cost: free with a vegan dish or beverage to share. Information: healthyplanet.blogspot.com You can't have a barbecue without meat, you say? Tell that to Healthy Planet of Brevard. This Sunday, the group will celebrate its eighth annual meat-free Heart-Healthy Summer Barbecue. The food and fun begin at noon, with lunch served at 12:30 p.m. The group, which promotes an animal-free diet, welcomes vegans, vegetarians and adventurous taste buds of any variety to come and enjoy plant-based fixings, provided by Sunseed Food Co-op in Cape Canaveral. "Basically, it's your typical outdoor barbecue: veggie hot dogs, veggie burgers, wholegrain rolls," said John Cielukowski, the group's advertising coordinator. "There are usually a lot of salads. It's quite a spread, anything from three-bean salad to vegan chocolate cake." Cielukowski said the event provides patrons with a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and share recipes. But even if you enjoy sirloin steak and ribs, HPoB is happy to share its alternative cuisine with you. "At most of our events we have people who aren't vegetarian or who are leaning to vegetarian," Cielukowski said. "That doesn't bother us. We welcome everyone." Cielukowski said those who fear the taste of meatless burgers or hot dogs might be surprised by how delectable the alternatives are. "One of the big things that I see, a lot of the veggie burgers on the market, some of them, once you put on lettuce and tomato, they taste exactly like a regular burger. There's such a range of alternatives, you don't really need to rely on meat," he said. The Heart-Healthy Summer Barbecue is free, though the group gladly will accept donations. Those planning to attend are asked to bring a vegan dish, made with no meat, fish, dairy, eggs or honey, or a beverage. HPoB, which formed a decade ago under the name Earth Save, promotes the health, compassion and the well-being of the animals and the environment. "We try to show people how their dietary choices affect not only their health but the health and environment of the planet," Cielukowski said. Thursday, June 23, 2005
