May Meeting Minutes
HEALTHY PLANET OF BREVARD MEETING MINUTES
May 24, 2005

The core group of the Healthy Planet of Brevard met at the home of Claris Withrow in Melbourne, on May 24, 2005, at 7:30 p.m. In attendance were Judy McCluney, Eric Fricker, Vicki Murfin, Barbara Bingnear, John Cielukowski and Claris Withrow. This meeting was supposed to be held on May 18th but because of conflicting work schedules for some of the core members, the meeting night has been changed to the fourth Tuesday of the month instead of the third Wednesday. The meeting room at the Satellite Beach Library was not available for that night until July. Until that time, we will be meeting in private homes.

Claris read the minutes of the last meeting.

Judy gave the treasurer’s report. After writing the $100 check donation to Chas Chiodo, the checking balance is $793.47.

Membership - Eric is in receipt of the membership cards sent by Dan Robinson and distributed them to the core members. There will be a Dining Out on June 4th and some will be distributed at that time. The rest will be mailed to members.

Advertising - John C. has made up flyers advertising the heart-healthy summer barbeque on Sunday, June 26th from 12:00 noon to 3:00. We will be celebrating our independence from meat-centered meals. John will check with Sunseed Coop for donations of food. They have always been very generous in the past for this event. People are asked to bring their own table service and a vegan covered dish. Herbal tea and water will be provided.

Events - Vicki reported that the Howard Lyman event will be held in the evening on November 21st. Paul Nisson could not give her a good date just yet but said it would probably be in the winter. She has contacted T Colin Campbell but has not heard back from him. Susan Rizzo will do a cooking demonstration but no definite date as yet.

Dining Out - Barbara reported that 7 people have signed for the dinner to be held on June 4th at the Gourmet Flavors To Go on Wickham Road in Melbourne.

The Suntree Rotary Park is available for our Turkey Free Thanksgiving so Judy engaged it for the November 19th event.

Barbara reported that she had received information about the Space Coast Progessive Alliance pot luck to be held on July 30th from 5:00 - 8:00 at the Kiwanis Island Park on Merritt Island. Vicki and Barbara plan to set up a HPoB information table.

Next meeting will be held on June 28th at Claris Withrow’s home at 7:30 p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

“Liver Cleansing” with Olive Oil and Lemon Juice – Myth
I found this short article of Dr. McDougall's to be very interesting, since I have read about liver cleansing many times in the past.

“Liver Cleansing” with Olive Oil and Lemon Juice – Myth

Could these be gallstones? Asked Christian Sies in the April 16, 2005 issue of the Lancet. A 40-year-old patient with many 1 to 2 mm gallstones underwent a “liver cleansing” with apple and vegetable juice, followed by 600 ml (20 ounces) of olive oil and 300 ml (10 ounces) of lemon juice, taken over several hours. She painlessly passed semisolid green “stones” with her stool. She brought them to her doctor, who examined them under a microscope and found no crystalline structures (as would be seen in an actual gallstone). Heating to 40 degree C for 10 minutes caused the “stones” to melt. Analysis showed they contained no cholesterol, bilirubin, or calcium (like a real stone might have). Chemical analysis found the “stones” were fat globules mostly from the olive oil. The investigators next made similar balls that looked like stones in their lab by mixing olive oil and lemon juice and then drying the mixture. Sometime later, the actual stones, which were made of cholesterol, were removed from the woman’s gallbladder by a surgeon.

Comments: Many people believe this alternative therapy really works, but the “gallbladder flush” is a myth. Gallstones are a result of supersaturation of the bile with cholesterol from the Western diet and they become stubbornly packed in the gallbladder. About 15% of people in Western societies have gallstones – eventually they become so common in middle-aged women that as many as half of them carry around stones – and most don’t know it. Gallstones that cause no pain or other symptoms should be left alone, rather than removed. (For more information on gallstones, please see my newsletter: April 2002 – A Stone-Free and Happy Gallbladder and May 2002 – Die With Your Gallstones.)

Our Mission
We promote food choices that are healthy for people and healthy for the planet. We inspire people to shift toward a plant-centered diet for health, compassion, animals and the environment.

Bequests and Memorial Gifts
Attachment to self-destructive food choices is ubiquitous. Everywhere in our society people fuel their bodies with foods [sic] that injure and harm, them and countless animals.
Emotional attachment to animal products is very tenacious. The indoctrination begins at an early age. Our country is reaping the rewards of this indoctrination today. Obesity, pain and early loss of health and life are caused by these self-destructive choices.
Healthy Planet of Brevard was formed to educate the public about the damage caused by these negative choices. HPoB also serves as an umbrella and an association for people who have embraced the message of increasing compassion and health.
Our group is slowly growing. We are frugal, with no paid employees. We are transparent, publishing our minutes on the web after each monthly core group meeting. We are working towards our mission for health, compassion, animals, and the environment.
Your contributions and bequests are received with gratitude.

Why The Change?
In our continuing feature "Why the Change?" we now present a great story from Pam and Quint Hjornevik. Many of you might know that Pam and Quint have moved to an Island far south of here in Central America.
"Greetings to all Healthy Planet members from the island of Roatan! You probably have thought that Quint and Pam Hjornevik fell off the face of the Earth, but they're still alive and well, trying to get into the SLOW pace of the island. If you want to see how their mission, First Fruits of First Bight, is progressing, you can visit their website at http://www.rawfoodrefuge.com/ . The website still needs a lot of work, but that takes time, which is still hard to find, even on a tropical island. The site doesn't go into the great and exciting work that's taking place in the raw food world down here, so, this should fill you all in a bit.

As soon as they arrived on the island, Pam and Quint were invited to several church members' homes for Sabbath afternoon meals. The first place was one of the elders who was very open and already quite prepared for the raw food message. He passed on to their pastor about how "on fire" they were about this health message, and the pastor, in front of the whole congregation, invited them to present the raw food message, whenever they wanted, but as soon as possible!

So, before their home was even finished, they presented the raw food message, not only to the church, but representatives from most of the Seventh-day Adventist churches on the island. It was a RAW WEEKEND, and people went away thrilled with the message. They had a slide presentation for the regular church service to about 110 people on Saturday, followed by a raw lunch, where they served around 65 people. The people stayed for more slide shows and food preparation demonstrations. Sunday, 45 people returned for Victoria Boutenko's 12-Step program (given by Pam) and more food preps with taste-testing/lunch--all day! They had a grand time, seeing the peoples' faces lighted up with enthusiasm and conviction. Now, they have requests for the message to be presented on the sister island of Guanaja. Also, they've had a raw food support group meeting monthly and in June will be starting another support group on the other side of the island. First Fruits of First Bight will be having their first client at the end of June."

HPoB Core Group Meeting Minutes
HEALTHY PLANET OF BREVARD MEETING MINUTES
April 27, 2005

The core group of the Healthy Planet of Brevard met at the Satellite Beach Library, on April 27, 2005, at 7:30 p.m. In attendance were Judy McCluney, Eric Fricker, Vicki Murfin, Barbara Bingnear, Marcie Katz and Claris Withrow.

Claris read the minutes of the last meeting.

Eric read the Mission Statement again. “We promote food choices that are healthy for people and healthy for the planet. We inspire people to shift toward a plant-centered diet for health, compassion, animals and the environment.” This was to renew it in everyone’s mind.

Judy gave the treasurer’s report. $10 in donations were taken in at the Will Tuttle event. The checking balance is $1,043.47. Eric thanked Judy for all her work as treasurer.

Membership - Eric read the report sent via e-mail from Dan Robinson. There are 39 members. 29 members are on the suspended list as they have not renewed their membership for 2005. Dan is in the process of contacting them. The membership cards are being sent by U.S. Mail.

Events - Vicki received a letter reply from the Buddhist Monk, Claude Thomas. He will be available in the fall of 2006 to speak at an event for HPoB. He has no speaking fee but does ask for a donation to his foundation. Vicki will talk with him to get further information. She will also talk with Paul Nisson for a possible September event. Ingrid Newkirk will be in Florida the same weekend that Howard Lyman will be here so Vicki will contact her to see if she could maybe come back in the spring of 2006. Eric has received information about a Farmer Brown who is on a speaking tour. He is a farmer who has become vegan. Vicki will contact him for a possible speaking event. Discussion was held about asking Susan Rizzo to do a cooking demonstration. Howard Lyman will be here in October. Barbara will look into engaging the auditorium at Brevard Community College in Melbourne for the event. If it is not available, the Cocoa Beach Library meeting room will be utilized.

Dining Out - There was no Dining Out in April. Barbara reported that the next possibility will be June 4th.

The date for the Turkey-Free Thanksgiving event is set for November 19th. Judy will check on Suntree Rotary Park availability.

Marcie Katz reported that graduation at Florida Tech is May 4th and there aren’t many students on campus after that. Rollins College and University of Central Florida are other possibilities. She will research where to go to hand out leaflets. Much information is available on Vegan Outreach.com and pamphlets are .25 cents each. Also she mentioned that there will be a PETA conference in Miami October 22nd and 23rd.

Eric needs articles for the newsletter. Anyone can write anything that would be of interest to the group, on animals or whatever.

After considerable discussion, Judy made the motion to send $100 to Chas Chiodo for his Animal Rights/Vegetarian Education radio program which he is trying to get underway in Gainesville. Barbara seconded the motion and it carried. As Chas is always supportive of our events, we thought it fitting to help him out with this.

Next meeting will be held on May 18th at the Satellite Beach Library at 7:30 p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
