[Hpob-ann] The Healthy Planet Newsletter, Email Newsletter, special edition The Healthy Planet Newsletter, Email Newsletter, special edition Healthy Planet of Brevard... health, compassion, animals, environment This Email Newsletter is transmitted about once monthly, if you would like to be removed please contact us at fricker3@yahoo.com. Web site: http://healthyplanet.blogspot.com/ We normally try to send out only one newsletter a month, however one of our members has a high priority event coming up that is right up our alley. So please read this and see if you can help. Event Sponsorship Opportunity Gayle Hoffman, an HPoB member and WFIT Volunteer has contacted me about a Michael Tomlinson concert for Feb. 11! Gayle's idea was that because Michael Tomlinson is a vegetarian and is very interested in environmental issues, there may be people/companies in the Healthy Planet group that would like to support the radio station as well as the performer. This is a fundraiser for Florida Tech's WFIT radio station. The event will be held at the Gleason Performing Arts Center on the Florida Tech campus. Gayle thought that maybe organizations like Grumman or Harris might have public affairs officers who are responsible for community projects and donations. Or smaller companies/businesses that would like the radio and print promotional opportunities might be interested. For more information about Michael Tomlinson, please go to michaeltomlinson.com The following is the Event sponsorship information: In exchange for a generous sponsorship, your organization will receive: 30 second on-air radio spots based on a choice of 2 levels ofsupport: 1. a $250 sponsorship has 12 radio spots 2. a $500 sponsorship has 25 radio spots Plus: The organization's logo will be on print media promotional materials, including advertisements in Florida Today,· The organization's name will be included in all WFIT radio announcements regarding the concert, (roughly 100). Acknowledgement as a sponsor at the concert itself and VIP seating for selected representatives of your organization (you can choose creative ways to select the employees who receive the tickets) Please feel free to contact Gayle during the day at her work email address: gayle.hoffman@brevardcounty.us or Barbara Bingnear at bingnear@fit.edu. Thank you for your consideration and assistance. Treasurer In our last newsletter I failed to mention that Judy McCluney was elected as our Treasurer for 2005. Judy has done so much to help HPoB, she spearheaded the Turkey-free Thanksgiving and in the past she has been a big part of our Taste of Health events. We are lucky to have her help. Next time you run into these folks, please thank them for the extra effort they have given throughout the year. The work they do increases the compassion locally for the many animals that most people just consider to be food. Your new leadership is ;-) Eric Fricker, Chair, Claris Withrow, Secretary, John Cielukowski, Advertising,Vicki Murfin, Events Coordinator, Barbara Bingnear, Dining Out Coordinator, Dan Robinson, Membership Coordinator, Your Name Here, PotLuck Coordinator, Your Name Here, Tabling Coordinator Why I became a vegan, by Eric Fricker I made the connection between my bad health, my daughters skin disease and my diet. After reading "May All Be Fed" by John Robbins it was clear to me that I was putting the wrong fuel in my body. Of course I survived for many years on the calories, but they came with some grime known as saturated fat, cholesterol, anti-biotics and free-radicals. The fat and cholesterol had taken their toll and by 32 my heart would beat out of my chest whenever I was startled. My cholesterol level was 242 and I was a couch potato. The animal products that I was eating were missing a few important things such as fiber, phyto-chemicals, and folic acid. That folic acid was very important to my daughter Emily and her skin rebounded soon after we shifted to a low-fat vegan diet. I hope I haven't damaged myself beyond repair. I feel much better, my cholesterol is much better. Now at 44 years of age, when I am watching my fat intake, my cholesterol level has been as low as 155. I no longer have those episodes where my heart beats out of my chest. I now enjoy talking about my health and helping others see that a more compassionate diet can be tasty and enjoyable. I no longer crave cheese. The smell of animal flesh burning is actually repulsive to me and to think 9 years ago I thought it smelled good. And all that fiber! I will spare you the details of what all that fiber does, let's just sum it up in one word - satisfaction. :-) Please send us a paragraph about why you became a vegan, so that others may benefit from your experience. Next month look forward to reading Claris' story right here. HPoB History Healthy Planet is a local vegetarian/vegan group that has been around for about a year and a half. Before that we were a local EarthSave group. We would like to take a moment to thank all the core members who first created the EarthSave group here in 1995, John Cielukowski, Eric Fricker, Scott Harmon, Andy Burfitt, Rick Anderson, Suchita Pringle, Don Jette and Earle Harris (the Peas Pilgrim or EarthSave Ambassador). As we grew we found Barbara Bingnear who you all know as our Dining Out Coordinator and for years she has been faithfully putting on Dining Outs around the county. Then we were lucky enough to find the Elliot's, Suzanne became our Chair and Joe the Treasurer, together they really made our group grow. Along the way Lisa Kelley, Kim Sellers, Kathy Bean were great workers and core members. We have since reorganized as Healthy Planet of Brevard. Our core group is currently blessed by the work of Judy McCluney (this is Judy of 'Taste of Health' and 'Turkey-Free Thanksgiving' fame), Claris Withrow, Dan Robinson, Vicki Murfin, Megan Stolen, Rose Forbes and Rick Kump. So we have been around for 9 years last November, actively working to bring about more healthful food choices. While we are no longer an EarthSave group we still support their work and their mission. This Just in From the Latest Issue of Meatout Mondays Student Activist, Rick Kump [a member of HPoB] Currently a sophomore at the University of Central Florida, Rick Kump has accomplished what some activists achieve in a lifetime. A vegan for 5 years, Rick works towards his ideal world, in which humans and animals coexist as peacefully as possible. Animal rights literature follows Rick wherever he goes. He has helped dozens of people over the internet, mostly young people, switch to a vegetarian diet. A certified Nutrition Specialist from Ekaya Health Institute, Rick also does vegan nutrition counseling for adults over the phone. Additionally, he has organized and attended local protests for animal welfare, and has participated in national and international conferences for animals rights. Most recently, Rick and students from the Body of Animal Rights Campaigners gathered in front of the Student Union at the University of Central Florida beforeThanksgiving to pass out animals rights and vegan literature. Space Coast Progressive AllianceWe would like to thank the Space Coast Progressive Alliance for their support throughout 2004. They emailed our events schedule to their membership and many have attended our Dining Outs. They are planning their 1st Annual Progressive Celebration, which will be a General membership meeting, pot luck, social, entertainment, presentation of awards, and election of SCPA officers. It will be on Sunday, January 23, from 3-6 p.m. at Cocoa Riverfront Park and Ballroom. Perhaps we should show up with lots of good vegan food for the potluck. SCPA Information: Sunday, January 23, 2005, 3-6 pm, 1st Annual Progressive Celebration at Riverfront Park and Ballroom, Cocoa For our growing progressive community, hosted by the Space Coast Progressive Alliance. Our group takes no political positions, other than on specific food and animal issues (the pig petition comes to mind). If any other quasi-political groups or even political parties would like to advertise our events to their membership, we would be happy to thank them in future issues of The Healthy Planet Newsletter. Information from the Florida Native Plant Society: "The Conradina Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will meet on 10 January, Monday, at the Melbourne Library, 540 E. Fee Ave, at 7:00pm. Our speaker will be the always well received Ann Birch. She is the former head of the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program office and currently is championing the Indian River Lagoon for The Nature Conservancy. Perhaps there are some native plants we can desicate in the future, what do you say FNPS? We would like to share information with other local groups, so please send us your groups information.
