Michael Greger, M.D. Sued by Atkins
Let's Help My friend and colleague, Micheal Greger, M.D. is being sued by the Atkins organization because he has published a comprehensive indictment of the dangers of the Atkin's diet on the website, www.AtkinsFacts.org . The Atkins' company thinks because of its wealth they can silence critics and stop dedicated physician like Dr. Greger from speaking the truth about their dangerous and fraudulent nutritional claims. Dr. Greger is a self-sacrificing, do-gooder who has my respect and admiration. I strongly encourage all members to send a check to Dr. Greger to help him stand up to this attack and expose the truth behind the low carb lies. Please send checks to the Michael Greger Legal Fund, at 185 South St #6, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130. or go to www.veganMD.org and click on the donate link on the bottom. If every person who reads this sends even $10, we can make a huge contribution support his legal defense.Dr. Joel Fuhrman, MD

I thought you guys may want to help especially since we hosted Dr. Greger to the Space Coast. ~ Suzanne

This just in from the Nature Conservancy
Hi Eric,

Hope you remember me. I came down and spoke to your group a couple of years ago about the state's Florida Forever land conservation program and had a wonderful potluck dinner with you guys! I'm writing to you now to ask if you know that a ballot measure to fund Brevard County's Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program will be on the upcoming Nov. 2nd Election? The referendum will as voters to authorize new bonds to pay for completion of county purchases of lagoon properties, scrub land and other endangered native habitat, as well as open space to keep everything from being paved in the county. The cost is about $17 per year in property taxes (unless you have a big mansion on the beach, then it costs more of course), and it won't actually even be an increase in your current tax bill becasue it will take the place of the taxes now paid on Beaches and Riverfronts program (which is retiring). I'm working with a local committee (Preserve Brevard) to pass this important measure, and would love to have the support of your fine group. Check out the website www.preservebrevard.org and see what you think. We're trying hard to spread the word so we can get voters' support. Any help, endorsement, fundraising, etc. would be truly appreciated. Let me know what you think.

Dan Robinson, our Membership Coordinator, is looking for individuals interested in participating in the Keep Brevard Beautiful program by adopting a section of road or a section of shoreline in Brevard County to keep clean. The program involves a commitment to clean up litter along the adopted area four times per year.

Training, team t-shirts, tools, and safety equipment are provided by the County. There are lots of areas to choose from.

Part of our mission to maintain a healthy planet includes what we can do at a local level to keep our environment clean, healthy, and habitable.

There are people who foul the environment, and fortunately there are people to clean up the mess that these inconsiderate folks leave behind. You can be a part of the group dedicated to saving our local environment from the forces of decay.

To sign up or for further information contact Dan Robinson at dcr100@juno.com.

Are you concerned about water consumption? If so, please check out this article, Meat-Eaters Soak Up the World's Water, at http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0823-02.htm

Judy reported that the treasury balance is $700.25.

The next Dining Out on September 18, is to be held at the Asian Gourmet restaurant in Melbourne. Dan read the menu. No price has been established as yet.

Rose had just returned from an Alaskan Cruise where she picked up a brochure put out by the Vancouver Island Vegetarian Association. She suggested that maybe we could do one similar. This also will be discussed at the next meeting.

Judy had received information from Riverside Bank offering the organization a credit card. Discussion was held and will be continued at next meeting. Judy made a motion to get the card as there was a September 10th deadline for application. Barbara seconded the motion. Motion carried.
